Session Type: Workshop
In this session we will explore bell hooks’ concept of “coming to voice”; learning how to speak up for ourselves and for injustices, as well as Chilean/French activist/rapper Ana Tojoux’s take on it through Hip Hop culture, specifically her piece “Sacar La Voz” (to speak out).
Participants will engage in Musicking (Small, 1998) as well as the co-creation of an activist music education (Hess, 2019) by exploring collective rhythmic improvisation based on fire Hip Hop drum beats, circle singing in the style of Bobby McFerrin and finally create a full beat using open source software as they craft a piece of artivism that as Toni Cade Bambara invites us to do; “to make the revolution irresistible”.
