Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, we invite critical conversation about the role of sociocultural and socioemotional context within the Active View of Reading, and more broadly, within reading science discourse and research. Multiple scholars will share a rich variety of findings from our individual and collective research on the roles of sociocultural context and socioemotional variables in language and literacy development. Our primary goal is to engage the scholars and attendees in dialogue about the way culture mediates cognition and behavior. This dialogue is particularly important in the light of current conversations in literacy, where the role of sociocultural context and socioemotional variables can be omitted or framed through a deficit lens.
