PD24-11: Developing Tools for Analysis Using Narratives

Abstract

The purpose of this session is supporting emerging and experienced qualitative researchers in developing skills for using analytic tools within narrative research projects. The session begins with a brief presentation about types of narrative research and each presenters giving a brief description of their session. The session contains four 45-minute rounds of workshops focused on tools for narrative analysis Participants can select four of the eight 45-minute workshops. The workshop directors have expertise in the tools taught and have designed sessions and developed handouts that will enable narrative researcher in using a wider range of analytic tools in narrative research. During the session, researchers will learn the theoretical underpinnings of the tool, have hands-on experiences using it and have guidance in developing skill through interaction with experienced, published and well researchers who engage in narrative research: Stefinee Pinnegar, Shaun Murphy, Janice Huber, Svanborg Jonsdottir, Deborah Tidwell, Eliza Pinnegar, Cathy Coulter, Elaine Chan, Vicki Ros, Celina Lay, HySeung Lee, Eunhee Park, Ambry Rios, and Cheryl Craig. The tools taught include autobiographical narrative research, tools for multicultural studies, narrative beginnings, narrative music analysis, literary analysis, use of narrative vignettes with large data sets, memory work, and using visuals. The goal of the workshops and the session as a whole is for researchers to develop versatility and strength in analytic skills will enable researchers to produce more nuanced and trustworthy findings.
