This symposium explores how literacy practices are often controlled by dominant racial and linguistic groups through the Writingworld theoretical framework. We introduce the theory and illustrate the relationships with power, writing, agency, and social change with three empirical projects with diverse groups in Canada and a fourth project with exiled language rights activists from Iran.
