"Hasta La Raíz": Rooting Justice-Centered Dual Language Bilingual Education in Illinois

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 109B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

While much of the research focused on bilingual education comes from the Southwest or New York, Illinois has a long history of supporting bilingual education and has the fifth highest number of emergent bilingual students in the country. Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs hold potential for shifting assimilative language ideologies that prioritize English-language instruction, as well as promoting the sustainment of Spanish in Latinx communities. This symposium presents research studies that illuminate the current state of DLBE in Illinois. Findings illustrate the ongoing challenges with the implementation of DLBE programs, including the role that school choice plays in the access Latinx communities have to these programs, the ongoing gentrification of DLBE, and the intersection of disabilities and DLBE.
