Session Type: Symposium
This symposium will uncover the complexity of inequalities and injustices that many newcomer ELL students encounter within the language and literacy learning process in North American schools. Using four research papers that incorporate various frameworks and methodologies, the symposium will problematize the concept of race neutrality and delves into the potential sites of intersectional racism and injustice. Additionally, it will examine the role of multilingual and multimodal narratives in enhancing language and literacy learning. By confronting racial discourses, challenging race-neutrality, and empowering students to express their intersectional narratives, the symposium hopes to inspire transformative practices in education, and foster a holistic understanding of the educational experiences of newcomer ELL students.
