Speculative Science Education Toward Socioecological Care

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 115B

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

The goal of this session is to explore possibilities and challenges in cultivating socioecological care through speculative science education. The collected work spans a wide range of settings both formal and informal, and involves a diversity of participants from young learners to adult educational leaders. Across these various contexts, the authors recognize the need to reimagine and transform science and environmental learning settings toward more just socioecological futures. Authors point to significant challenges in these efforts, including the necessity of unlearning harmful ways of thinking and doing. However, on the whole, this session offers reasons for hope—the brilliance of young children, the potential of artistic expression, the power of collective design, and more.
