Session Type: Structured Poster Session
In the session, informal learning environments (ILE) researchers and practitioners present 12 projects that utilize anti-deficit, strength-based approaches to support learning with (and ILE educators of) children, youth, families, and young adults. Quantitative, qualitative, mixed-method, and review studies highlight ways anti-deficit approaches can be integrated into ILE work, providing valuable models for theoretical framing, methods, analysis, and program implementation. Projects represent a range of informal learning settings (e.g., science center, art museum, library, afterschool program, home, and digital learning environment) and include learners with diverse racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, linguistic backgrounds and abilities. Attendees will engage in conversations with graduate students, early career researchers, prominent ILE scholars, and practitioners to collectively co-construct promising ways to move the ILER community toward radical transformation.
