Preparing Antiracist ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Professionals: Creating Racially Just Educational Spaces for Multilingual Learners

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 307

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Within teaching and learning spaces, especially those focused upon multilingual learners, we find the existence of linguistic racism, which refers to ideologies and practices “utilized to conform, normalize and reformulate an unequal and uneven linguistic power between language users” (de Costa, 2020, p. 834) and needs to be examined in relation to the sociopolitical contexts in which multilingual speakers are embedded and in conjunction with work on linguicism and native-speakerism. This symposium will explore questions related to power and privilege that exist within the ESOL field, provide an overview of historically racist practices within the field, and suggest principles for evolving the preparation of ESOL teachers and leaders in order to create more equitable, antiracist environments for all learners.
