Equitable Access and Promising Practices: Supporting Multilingual Learners Beyond the “Core”

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 308

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

While efforts have been made to prepare teachers for working with multilingual learners (MLs; Villegas et al. 2018), these efforts have primarily focused in “core” disciplinary areas of math, social studies, language arts, and sciences (e.g. Coady et al., 2016; Merga et al., 2020; Ollerhead, 2018). However, MLs should also be able to fully participate in what are commonly referred to as “specials” (e.g., art) and “less traditional” education spaces (e.g., museum education). Little is known about teacher training for MLs beyond the “core” disciplines or about MLs experiences within these spaces (Authors, 2020, 2022a, 2022b). This session highlights emerging research in teacher education and equitable access for MLs in museum, career/technical, art, and physical education.
