Informed by sociolinguistics, this session will highlight the research of various scholars and practitioners that provides valuable insight into alternative understandings of language, identity and education, by examining instances of inequality and power, as well as resistance, creativity and counter-hegemonic practices. The themes addressed in the session include: the educational possibilities of social, linguistic and gender identity justice, the importance of theorizing about language through the lens of race, and the role of humanizing pedagogies.
