Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: Individual Differences in Feedback Perceptions, Use, and Effectiveness

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 109B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Receiving feedback triggers cognitive and motivational processes relevant for learning engagement. Recent research advances emphasize the learner's central role in feedback effectiveness, highlighting active student engagement as the main determinant of success. However, what makes students engage with the feedback is still not well understood, especially concerning specific learning conditions and learner characteristics. In this symposium, we take a detailed look on how students’ prerequisites relate to how they perceive the feedback and benefit from it. Integrating research from various theoretical perspectives, we explore how student characteristics matter for feedback effectiveness. Four studies demonstrate the importance of student-feedback interactions in understanding how and when feedback is effective for learning. Two leading scholars will critically discuss these findings and future directions.
