Although there has been an emphasis on community-engaged approaches to research in the broader field of education these approaches are rarely utilized in the academic fields of STEM and STEM education research. This symposium presents three papers drawn from a large community-engaged postdoctoral fellowship program at Michigan State University to 1) explore the storied process of developing a large-scale proposal to recruit postdoctoral scholars in STEM using community and participatory approaches; 2) describe the personal and shared experiences of making community through a collaborative and connected auto-ethnographic methodology; and 3) demonstrate the value in theorizing and reimagining Indigenous perspectives toward building a sense of belonging and community.
