Empowering Student Voice in Educational Practice: Student Voice to Student Outcomes

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 118C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium shares the results of a three-year research project on student voice, conducted in partnership with youth. Exemplifying the conference theme, student voice practices can address racial injustice by engaging students in equity-oriented educational change. The study builds evidence for the value of student voice practices in moving the needle on critical student outcomes and in creating more equitable learning environments for all students. Our papers: 1) define student voice, 2) use mixed methods to demonstrate the various impacts of student voice practices at the school and classroom levels, and 3) describe conditions that enable and constrain student voice. Overall, this symposium emphasizes ways to involve students in decision making processes, modeling an equity-oriented pluralistic democracy in school settings.
