Situating Complexities of (Missing) Representation in Teacher Education for Social Justice: U.S. and German Contexts

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 104B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Strengthening intersectional, interdisciplinary and transcultural perspectives, this symposium addresses the complexities and situatedness of (missing) representation as well as (lack of) diversity in teacher education and teaching based on contributions from the US and Germany. Following a shared theoretical lens of social justice-oriented teaching, critical literacy, diversity and inclusive education, we engage with (student) teachers’ experiences of exclusion and racial injustice by combining results of a German biographical study with a case study on the care oriented pedagogical practice of a Black male teacher in the US. Furthermore, we interrogate representations in teaching materials and discuss educational possibilities to enhance teacher candidates’ critical thinking as well as reflective practice by presenting a collaborative, transcultural seminar in initial teacher education.
