Youth-Led Research on the Effects of Racial Microaggressions in U.S. High Schools: Processes and Findings

Sun, April 14, 11:25am to 12:55pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 117

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The Youth Research Council (YRC) was founded in 2021 to gather 30-40 racially and ethnically diverse youth as co-researchers alongside university-based researchers from George Mason University to conduct research on an issue important to those youth and then to provide research findings to local decision makers along with recommendations for policy changes. Over the past two years the YRC has conducted mixed methods research to explore the mental health effects of racial microaggressions on high school students in the United States. The goal of this panel is to introduce the YRC as a promising model for school-university-community partnership, and to present and engage the audience in critical dialogue about the YRC’s research values, structure, findings, and potential.
