"It’s a West Philly Thing": Conversations With Intergenerational Community-Driven Civic Action Research Collectives Pursuing Justice

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 110A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

To combat the long history of predatory, extractive research approaches which further marginalize and misrepresent minoritized communities (Hayward et al., 2021; Minkler, 2005), this session’s four research collectives have implemented studies using a community-driven participatory action research (CPAR) methodology (Burns et al., 2012; Montoya & Kent, 2011) through anti-racist frameworks (Delgado et al., 2017). These intergenerational, community-university teams have been working together for three to six years pursuing justice through civic action. They use multimodal qualitative designs (Merriam & Tisdell, 2016; Yin, 2018) to investigate how various sociopolitical forces have acted upon and through the P-20 educational institutions located in West Philadelphia. Implications for researchers aiming to implement a CPAR approach to pursue transformative social change will be shared.
