Arts Learning Across the Lifespan: Social-Emotional, Cognitive, and Physiological Benefits

Sat, April 13, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 404

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This program explores the impacts of arts learning across the lifespan (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) for individual outcomes such as social-emotional health and well-being, cognitive development, and physiological development. The session will include four presentations followed by a discussant. Papers will cover experimental and quasi-experimental studies of arts-based learning programs focused on different age groups: preschoolers, elementary school students, high school students, and adults. The discussant will use a positive psychology lens to provide a unique perspective of the papers as they relate to human flourishing across the lifespan. The goal of the session is to encourage rich and interdisciplinary dialogue on the positive impacts that arts learning, across many artistic disciplines, can have on youth and adult outcomes.
