Schools as Centers of Wellness: Innovating for More Equitable, Sustainable School-Based Mental Health

Sun, April 14, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Franklin 11

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

As the youth mental health crisis continues to accelerate, educational scholars and practitioners are motivated to conduct collaborative research and engage in responsive action. This symposium presents three papers on a new school-based mental health (SBMH) model: Schools as Centers of Wellness (SCOW). SCOW seeks to place a licensed clinician in every school to address the unmet mental health needs of students, and to lead broader school-level transformations for wellbeing. These papers (1) explore partnership-driven innovations in SBMH initiatives – both in the design and implementation; and (2) discuss the collaborative processes (e.g., co-interpretation) among research and practice partners, which generated the findings. This symposium will explore how collaborations can create authentic, equity-enhancing partnerships to meet the needs of students.
