Session Type: Symposium
This symposium brings together five papers examining the multilingual literacy learning of students in Grades 4 and 5. The participating speakers shed light on the multiple aspects of multilingual students’ experiences, including their development of linguistic awareness, discourse practices, and small group literacy engagement. The papers bring together diverse epistemological stances ranging from psycholinguistic explorations of morphological awareness across home languages to critical perspectives on how discussions of race and identity empower teachers and students. Several papers highlight the importance of small group discussions as a site for multilingual literacy learning in elementary school classrooms. Together, these areas of focus and diverse theoretical perspectives highlight the many forms of multilingual literacy in the elementary classroom.
