Session Type: Working Group Roundtable
This session presents four papers focused on social justice and community engagement in math education: Antiracist Algebra; Social Justice Mathematics in Precalculus; Data Warriors; and Math Community Nights. Each project creates opportunities for young people and their families/communities to come together differently around mathematics. To connect the different projects, we have abstracted three themes. First, each paper will describe the theoretical frameworks informing the vision/mission of the project. Second, each paper discusses tensions and lessons learned as they implemented their project and share practical guidance for working with youth, teachers, and families/communities in math education. Lastly, each one looks ahead, describing how they hope to grow and improve each project in future iterations.
