Session Type: Symposium
We are living in unprecedented times: the Covid endemic, book bans, whitewashing history, and attacks on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI). These are only the latest repercussions from the latest efforts to destroy the minimal work towards inclusive education being done throughout the country. The objective of this session is to explore how the work of ethnic studies (ES) subverts these attacks by offering oppressed students access to critical, liberatory educational experiences. Our diverse set of research papers represent a variety of methodological, disciplinary, geographic, and relational positionalities to examine ES in our respective contexts. We leverage student interviews, ethnographic classroom observations, and longitudinal administrative data to examine ES programs as they grow and persist in the face of ongoing opposition.
