Session Type: Symposium
This symposium aims to showcase five research projects across the United States and globally that engaged youth, educators, and community members in co-designing and implementing place-based and culturally responsive social-emotional learning (SEL) programs. Using a variety of research methods, these studies share the similarities in foregrounding culture and the local context where children are situated to promote their social-emotional competencies and wellbeing. Informed by the Transformative SEL framework, the symposium illustrates how participatory and design-based research can be used for researchers to build trusting relationships with communities and create space to dream new educational possibilities.
