University-Community Engagement as a Strategy for Dismantling Racial Injustice and Co-Constructing Educational Possibilities

Sat, April 13, 3:05 to 4:35pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 115B

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

This session explores how universities and communities work together as collaborative partners to dismantle racial injustice and co-construct equitable learning environments. These partnerships question and problematize the implied hierarchical division between university researchers and “everyday people” who may benefit from education research (Author, 2021). Presentations from an international network of university and community partners draw on community based design approaches that transform institutional relationships and promote educational equity (Bang & Medin, 2010; Bang & Vossoughi, 2016; Gutiérrez & Jurow, 2016). Posters explore the impacts of these co-created equitable learning environments across a range of communities including K-12 and undergraduate students from historically marginalized communities as well as the intersection of communities including undergraduates, teachers/pre-service teachers, families, and community members as researchers.
