Session Type: Workshop
In order to dismantle racial injustice within the academy, we have to contend with the hegemonic perceptions of academic writing and its gatekeeping function, especially when it comes to our students who are AAE speakers. In this workshop, we will present some background on AAE and academic writing, show some examples of urban students’ academic writing with grammatical breakdowns and explanations, then open a discussion on how best to reconstruct educational possibilities in spaces that have historically required an academic writing style.
