Session Type: Symposium
The histories, cultural practices, interests, and ingenuity of youth of color with and without disabilities have been excluded from schools’ problem-solving and decision-making activities. This panel brings together empirical studies on transgressive methodologies through which youth of color are empowered to critically examine and change policies, programs, and practices, undermining their educational opportunities and consequential life outcomes. These transgressive methodologies create an emancipatory space for future-making, in which youth of color and adult allies work together to design and enact their new educational and sociopolitical futures. This session aims to facilitate scholarly dialogue on how to amplify the voices of youth of color emancipatory tools and processes to disrupt intersectional marginalization perpetuated by the ableist and marginalizing school systems.
