Shifting Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Toward Equity: Integrating Systemic SEL, Transformative SEL, and Implementation Science

Sun, April 14, 1:15 to 2:45pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 301

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

SEL can improve student outcomes – when implemented well. “Implementation science” has improved SEL practice, but largely focuses on classrooms – not the macrosystems in which they operate. “Systemic SEL” engages macrosystem components to support, integrate, and sustain SEL. Systemic SEL names equity as important, but supports existing systems – rather than dismantling systems perpetuating inequity. “Transformative SEL” (tSEL) seeks to disrupt power/privilege and inequitable environments, but doesn’t yet connect concepts to implementation structures/routines. Co-chairs share an overarching “systemic tSEL implementation” framework. Papers explore how critical contexts (e.g., COVID, racism, poverty) and practice levers (i.e. partnerships, supports, capacities, and structures/routines) inform systemic tSEL implementation. We will discuss whether and how systemic tSEL implementation can shift SEL towards equity.
