Session Type: Workshop
Youth, educators, and community members who engage within academic scholarship spaces (e.g., university partnerships, conferences) often navigate difficult terrain. Institutional barriers and gatekeeping (e.g., steep conference costs, lack of acknowledgement of intersectional roles of community members) can circumscribe the engagement of youth and community members in both participating in and presenting research. This workshop provides a forum to (1) discuss the challenges and opportunities of community-engaged scholarship and (2) to partner with community members and researchers to ask: How can we disrupt institutional barriers that limit community-engaged scholarship engagement? This session will position dialogue in the context of AERA as a case study for examination of institutional supports and barriers and to identify strategies for successful community engagement.
