Session Type: Symposium
This session focuses on how current teacher workforce policies perpetuate educational inequities, especially racial and ethnic inequities, for both teachers and students. First, the symposium will begin with research panelists using national data to illustrate the current state of the teacher workforce, with a specific focus on recruitment and retention of teachers of color and the inequitable distribution of credentialed and experienced teachers across schools. Then, the policy discussants will focus on outlining transformative policies at the local, state, and federal level that are needed to build and maintain a well-supported and racially diverse teacher workforce and to ensure equitable access to those teachers.
