Into the Fray: Critical Participatory Action Research Approaches for Impacting Policy and Building Community Power (Table 39)

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

This symposium brings together Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR) projects directly engaged with making, shaping, and/or interrupting youth-impacting policy. Through discussion across a range of policy sectors, we will critically consider the challenges and potential of PAR engaged in shaping youth-centered policy including rezoning and school integration policy, policy that surrounds LGBTQIA+ young people, city-wide school safety policy, and ethnic studies policy. Through discussion across projects, policy sectors, and scale, we will grapple with: the paradoxes of participatory “collaborations” with state agencies; participatory research as key approach for entrenched issues of inequity; the artful interruptions that emerge through participatory processes; the frustrations of implementation; and the rigor, organizing strength, and community power-building of policy interventions borne from critical PAR.
