Session Type: Symposium
Civic education scholars and researchers largely understand the goal of civic education to be to foster the development of citizens who will live in and maintain a pluralistic democracy. Instead of learning how to uphold a democracy with a diverse citizenry, students often find themselves subjected to a civics curriculum that privileges white, middle class cultural knowledge. In this symposium, we take up calls to reconceptualize civic education in ways that center the perspectives and lived experiences of people of Color. The goal is not to compare communities of Color to dominant white society but to explain how communities of Color have taken up our own definitions of civics and enacted it in our own ways.
