Session Type: Symposium
The five papers discussed in this session will rise up by offering the union of mathematics and youth participatory action research (YPAR) in service of young people and their communities. YPAR has a rich history in education, yet it is underexplored in mathematical education – a missed opportunity for researchers critically engaged with youth. Representing five unique geographies each study in this session offers unique insight into embodying YPAR as a critical way to create rich mathematical experiences for young people to collectively liberate themselves in working to improve their community.
Puebla is Filled With Mathematics: Centering Joy and Curiosity Is Just Part of the Work - Gabrielle Elizabeth Bernal, California State University - Monterey Bay

Youth Participatory Action Research in a High School Statistics Course - Larissa Peru, University of Arizona
I’m W.O.K.E.—Widening Options Through Knowledge and Empowerment: Mathematical Opportunities of Knowledgeable Enactment - Brian R. Lawler, Kennesaw State University
