“They’re Telling Us Not To”: Teaching for Racial Justice During Times of Censorship and Bans

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 3, Room 307

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Since 2020 many institutions have sought to reckon with our nation’s racist past and present. However, a harsh backlash to this progress has set its sights squarely on schools. Drawing from perspectives of teachers, teacher educators, and students, this session offers insights into what teaching and learning about racial justice can look like in K12 schools, despite a regressive political context.

A mixed-method study of student perspectives racial justice education in schools kicks off the session. Using a diverse array of methods and data sources, the next set of papers showcases studies of three different pedagogical approaches to ensuring a racially just classroom and curriculum. The final presentation will offer a researcher/practitioner framework for justice-oriented teaching.
