Language as Resistance: Empowering Students Through Translingual, Transnational, and Multimodal Pedagogies

Sat, April 13, 9:35 to 11:05am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 415

Session Type: Paper Session

Abstract

This conference session delves into the transformative potential of translingual pedagogies in the realm of bilingual and multicultural education. Drawing from four thought-provoking papers, this session explore the power of resistance, storytelling, and community writing as tools to empower multilingual students. The papers shed light on the experiences of Latinx students and Asian migrant teachers in the United States, highlighting their struggles against epistemic racism and the monocultural ideals prevalent in the education system. By harnessing transnational funds of knowledge and embracing translingual literacies, these educators and students embark on a journey to create equitable learning environments. Join us for a dynamic discussion on how these pedagogical approaches can foster inclusive, diverse, and empowering educational spaces.
