International Relations Committee Invited Session: From Global Anti-Blackness to Pro-Blackness in Educational Research and Teaching

Fri, April 12, 9:35 to 11:05am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 100, Room 120A

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Defining and documenting global anti-Blackness, presenters acknowledge the impact on African-descendant people worldwide. For example, recognizing the endemic violent impact on African diasporic people, the UN declared 2015–2024 the International Decade for People of African Descent. Likewise, the #BlackLivesMatter movement in the US calls for justice and human rights for people of African descent. Pro-Black pedagogies can be healing for Black people facing endemic anti-Blackness in society and the world. Contrasting educational research and theories that typically focus on individualistic-level analyses, Pro-Black pedagogies and research methodologies are communal, guided by Black-centered scholarship and frameworks. Considering Black people’s multi-dimensional racial identities, presenters highlight enduring cultural dimensions throughout the session, emphasizing that while culture morphs over time, deep cultural structure remains.
