Graduate Student Council Division B Fireside Chat: An Interlacing of Theory and Practice When Curriculum Is Under Attack

Thu, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 5, Salon H

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Many graduate students struggle with threading the relationship (the apparent gap) between theory and practice in general and within their own research projects, writing, and internship/practicum experiences, as well as with formulating their relationship to both. We believe this discussion is urgent within a context in which more expansive curricula--particularly curricula that center the histories, knowledge and perspectives of minoritized and marginalized communities due to race, gender and sexuality, disability, nationality and citizenship, and language, religion--is actively and increasingly being erased, silenced, slandered, banned, and made the subject of fear-mongering tactics. The discussion will relate to how graduate students can (re/un)think about the interlacing and interrelationality between theory and practice as they move through their studies into their careers.
