The Role of Education Statistics Within the Federal Statistical System

Abstract

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the nation’s source for trustworthy, non-biased data regarding the condition of education from early childhood through postsecondary and beyond. This session will feature comments from Peggy G. Carr, current NCES commissioner; Jack Buckley, former NCES commissioner (2011-13); and Bridget Terry Long, past chair of the National Board for Education Sciences, in examining accomplishments and updates that NCES has made and its future directions within the federal statistical system. This session will also highlight the innovations that the agency has made and is undertaking to promote equitable data and to produce timely and actionable statistics that help for understanding education outcomes and informing solutions to meet the needs of students, educators, and policymakers.
