Embracing Latine Families Toward True HSI Servingness: Decolonizing Campus Programs, Policy, and Practice

Abstract

Students of color were not the initial beneficiaries of higher education; thus they have been subject to disenfranchisement and exclusion. This resulted in students of color not feeling a sense of belonging, which impacts persistence. Similarly, as students of color perceive their campuses as chilly and inhospitable, for Latine students, this results in higher dropout rates than their Black and white peers. To address the concern of Latine student persistence, culturally based strategies have emerged that connect the value of parental engagement and support for these students. However, what is unknown is how becoming an HSI influences how these parents are engaged. This study explores how becoming an HSI influences how student affairs engages Latine families.
