Abstract

For the past two decades, there has been a push for teacher preparation programs to focus on clinical practices that interweave alongside university coursework seeking to disrupt the perennial disconnect between classroom practices and theories of teaching and learning. This qualitative study explores the ways that specific moves embedded in virtual coaching support prospective teachers in developing their teaching practice in clinical experiences. Analysis suggests that (1) questions to deconstruct representations of practice, (2) modeling, (3) messaging via Zoom chat, and (4) debriefing sessions placed clinical practices as cornerstone of teacher learning. These findings contributed to looking for alternative ways to provide high-quality coaching supports to prospective teachers in clinical experiences that leveraged on video-based technology and virtual manipulatives.
