Abstract

Historically white institutions (HWIs) can often be dangerous places for Black students, as their environments are often rife with racialized toxicity. This can create structural barriers that directly impact Black students as they attempt to persist, especially if they are Black and Pell-eligible. However, as institutional aspirations shift with the emergence of more Black students and other students of color, one group that often receives more attention is Latine students with the federal designation of becoming an HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution). Thus, although much is known regarding the experiences of Black students and those who are Pell eligible, less is known of Black Pell students attending Hispanic Serving Institutions. This study will share their experiences.
