Abstract

Advanced level math courses in high school are correlated with positive secondary and postsecondary outcomes. As a result, many state leaders have increased access to key gateway courses like Algebra 1 earlier in students' academic careers with the assumption that doing so will pave the way for more advanced math courses in high school. However, less attention has been paid to the predictive role of Algebra II. Algebra II, unlike Algebra I, is often optional, but can serve as a critical juncture for a student nonetheless. This study contributes to this gap by examining the impact of taking Algebra II during the first two years in high school on students’ advanced math course-taking as 11th and 12th graders.
