Abstract

Our paper illustrates a case of decolonial pedagogy that works towards deconstructing dominant narratives of migration, especially with non-immigrant students. Data come from a Sophomore English class that engaged in making sense of a popular media text on Giannis Antetokounmpo, produced by the National Basketball Association. We relate the concept of scale to deconstruction and decoloniality to show how multiple spatiotemporal contexts are evoked in foregrounding the marginal elements of the text and undermining the preferred hegemonic reading. By using grounded theory and discourse analyses, we examine the pedagogical moves and discursive markers of scaling for their ability to provide an expansive understanding of migration. Our paper informs decolonial pedagogical strategies for building epistemic solidarity across different social groups.
