AI-Enhanced Lesson Planning and Self-Efficacy: A Mixed Methods Study

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

The purpose of this mixed methods study (Creswell, 2007) was to investigate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on preservice teachers’ lesson planning and sense of self-efficacy (Bandura, 1977). Using the Large Language Model ChatGPT, the study investigated preservice teachers’ use of AI in lesson design and the resulting effect on their sense of self-efficacy with planning. Findings were mixed with the participants (n=9) indicating that ChatGPT was good in some areas of lesson planning. Survey results indicated that self-efficacy was positively affected by a statistically significant margin after using ChatGPT to design lessons.
