Voices From the Margins: Understanding Adjunct Perspectives in Teacher Education Programs

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 107

Abstract

This study explores the crucial role of education adjuncts in colleges, bridging theory and practice while often outnumbering full-time faculty due to budget constraints. Despite their valuable experience, many adjuncts work in isolation without broader institutional involvement. Using narrative inquiry, the research examines themes like belonging, communication, roles, expertise, and challenges faced by part-time faculty in a teacher preparation program. Real-world stories provide insights into adjunct experiences, highlighting the need for community-building initiatives, improved compensation, and enhanced communication. The study emphasizes the importance of effective support and retention strategies for adjunct faculty in teacher preparation programs.
