Navigating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Honors Colleges: A Mixed Methods Study

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 108

Abstract

Honors colleges enhance DEI in higher education through specialized learning for diverse, academically talented students, yet often lack diversity compared to broader student populations. This mixed-methods study examined DEI within one honors college (N=5,514) at a large predominantly White public institution in a rural mid-Atlantic state using demographic data, retention rates, completion rates, and student perceptions via surveys. Findings revealed racial disparities, notably underrepresentation of Black/African American students. Student characteristics such as BIPOC identity and disability status impacted program persistence and completion, while SES impacted inclusion. DEI initiatives were viewed positively by students, aligning with diversity climate and equity beliefs. The study offers insights and suggests interventions to create inclusive educational environments that effectively support diverse student populations.
