Abstract

One can use smartphones to extend their self, hence initiating smartphone self-extension. However, little is known about whether there are different patterns of smartphone self-extension and their relationships with smartphone addiction. Data were collected from 1,022 Chinese university students. Using three-step latent profile analysis, three distinct classes of smartphone self-extension were identified. Class 1 (15.9%) represented moderate functional, anthropomorphic, and ontological self-extension; Class 2 (60.3%) showed high functional but low anthropomorphic and ontological self-extension; and Class 3 (23.8%) exhibited high functional, anthropomorphic, and ontological self-extension. Higher levels of self-extension in all three types (Class 3) were likely to exhibit a severe level of smartphone addiction. Results facilitate understanding the nature and relation of smartphone self-extension patterns to problematic smartphone use.
