Sustainability Within Mission Statements in Higher Education: Are Institutional Missions Environmentally Sustainable?

Abstract

This study engages with the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings system to evaluate whether the top 218 ranked global universities address sustainability in their mission statements and what these statements contain, including actions, beliefs, goals, and collaboration efforts. Results suggest that institutions rarely address sustainability within mission statements and often publish mission statements that are decades old. Implications for research, practice, and policy are addressed.
