Abstract

We investigate the impact of using students' home languages and educational technology on mathematics achievement among Ghanaian students. The research underscores the challenges posed by language barriers in mathematics education by examining the experiences of twenty students who initially failed mathematics when instructed in English but succeeded after receiving instruction in their indigenous language via an educational app, AyaPrep. This study emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive mathematics teaching (CRMT), which incorporates students’ linguistic and cultural backgrounds into instruction. Results revealed that instruction in students' home languages enhances comprehension, engagement, and academic performance. This paper advocates for policy changes to prioritize home languages in education and explores the role of educational technology in creating inclusive, effective learning environments.
