Abstract

Over 50% of college students experience poor sleep quality, which has increased over the last several years. Lifestyle factors associated with this increase include addiction to smartphones and internet use. However, research examining the association between college students’ addictive use of social media and their sleep quality is scarce. Thus, this study explored the degree to which problematic social media use (PSMU) is associated with sleep quality via bedtime procrastination (BP). Moreover, we examined whether mindfulness moderates the association between PSMU and BP among 233 college students. Mediation analysis indicated the association between PSMU and sleep quality was better explained through BP. Moreover, mindfulness attenuated the association between PSMU and BP. Findings suggest enhancing mindfulness to improve college students’ sleep.
