Abstract

Many studies have explored the use of artificial intelligence techniques in asynchronous online discussions. By analyzing 32 empirical studies, this systematic literature review provided a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on this topic. It summarized the applications into three categories: information classification, participation facilitation, and content assessment. Information classification involves automatically extracting keywords, classifying discussion posts into different categories according to specific purposes, and providing feedback. Participation facilitation focuses on increasing student engagement by addressing students’ questions timely and helping students connect and collaborate. Content assessment focuses on analyzing discussion posts, grading, and providing suggestions for improvement. The findings suggest directions for future research.
